Lullaby

From the author of the New York Times bestseller Choke and the cult classic Fight Club, a cunningly plotted novel about the ultimate verbal weapon, one that reinvents the apocalyptic thriller for our times.Carl Streator is a solitary widower and a fortyish newspaper reporter who is assigned to do a series of articles on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. In the course of this investigation he discovers an ominous thread: the presence at the death scenes of the anthology Poems and Rhymes Around the World, all opened to the page where there appears an African chant, or ?culling song.? This song turns out to be lethal when spoken or even thought in anyone’s direction?and once it lodges in Streator’s brain he finds himself becoming an involuntary serial killer. So he teams up with a real estate broker, one Helen Hoover Boyle?who specializes in selling haunted (or ?distressed?) houses (wonderfully high turnover), and who lost a child to the culling song years before?for a cross-country odyssey to remove all copies of the book from libraries, lest this deadly verbal virus spread and wipe out human life. Accompanying them on this road trip are Helen’s assistant, Mona Sabbat, an exquisitely earnest Wiccan, and her sardonic ecoterrorist boyfriend Oyster, who is running a scam involving fake liability claims and business blackmail. Welcome to the new nuclear family. On one level, Lullaby is a chillingly pertinent parable about the dangers of psychic infection and control in an era of wildly overproliferated information: ?Imagine a plague you catch through your ears . . . imagine an idea that occupies your mind like a city.? But it is also a tightly wound thriller with an intriguing premise and a suspenseful plot full of surprising twists and turns. Finally, because it is a Chuck Palahniuk novel, it is a blackly comic tour de force that reinforces his stature as our funniest nihilist and a contemporary seer. From the Hardcover edition.

Insurance Services in China

How to Strategically Evaluate ChinaPerhaps the most efficient way of evaluating China is to consider key dimensions which themselves are composites of multiple factors. Composite portfolio approaches have long been used by strategic planners. The biggest challenge in this approach is to choose the appropriate factors that are the most relevant to international planning. The two measures of greatest relevance to insurance services are “latent demand” and “market accessibility”. The figure below summarizes the key dimensions and recommendations of such an approach. Using these two composites, one can prioritize all countries of the world. Countries of high latent demand and high relative accessibility (e.g. easier entry for one firm compared to other firms) are given highest priority. The figure below shows two different scenarios. Accessibility is defined as a firm’s ease of entering or supplying from or to a market (the “supply side”), and latent demand is an indicator of the potential in serving from or to the market (the “demand side”).Framework for Prioritizing CountriesDemand/Market Potential Driven FirmRelative AccessibilityAccessibility/Supply Averse FirmIn the top figure, the firm is driven by market potential, whereas the bottom figure represents a firm that is driven by costs or by an aversion to difficult markets. This report treats the reader as coming from a “generic firm” approaching the global market – neither a market-driven nor a cost-driven company. Planners must therefore augment this report with their own company-specific factors that might change the priorities (e.g. a Canadian firm may have higher accessibility in Canada than a German firm).Latent Demand and Accessibility in ChinaThis report provides a detailed overview of factors driving latent demand and accessibility for insurance services in China. Latent demand is largely driven by economic fundamentals specific to insurance services. This topic is discussed in Chapter 2 using work carried out in China on behalf of American firms and authored by the United States government (typically commercial attachés or similar persons in local offices of the U.S. Department of State). I have included a number of edits to clarify the information provided. Latent demand only represents half of the picture. Chapter 2 also deals with micro-accessibility for insurance services in China. I use the term “micro” since the discussion is focused specifically on insurance services.Chapter 3 is also a stand-alone report that I have authored. It covers proxy pro-forma financial indicators of firms operating in China. I use the word “proxy” because the provided figures only cover a “what if” scenario, based on actual operating results for firms in China. The numbers are only indicative of an average firm whose primary activity

The Regulatory Economics of Title Insurance

Dr. Lipshutz provides a concise but comprehensive overview of the key economic policy issues that arise in regulating this small but critical segment of the insurance industry. This is the first book to examine title insurance from a primarily economic viewpoint and contains much information on the operations of the industry that is available nowhere else. The book is particularly timely because title insurance regulation is currently under intensive study by a number of state insurance departments and by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

John Jacob Astor

A riveting biography of John Jacob Astor, the first American multinational entrepreneur. At his death in 1848, John Jacob Astor was the richest man in the United States. Ruthless, tight fisted but with an amazing gift for organizing businesses, Astor built an empire that spanned the commercial world of his time. Astor had an uncanny knack for getting out of an industry just before it went bust: he liquidated his China clippers just as tea from India and Japan cut into the China tea trade; he dropped his fur interests just as fashion shifted and before furs became too scarce to be used in the emerging ready-made clothing industry. He then successfully converted profits into Manhattan real estate. Written by bestselling biographer Axel Madsen, John Jacob Astor tells the fascinating tale of the immigrant son of a butcher who made his fortune in a new world where his money influenced public policy and led him to socialize with presidents and kings, and illuminates the story of the beginning of big business in America.

American Theocracy

The title of political analyst Phillips’s latest book may overstate his case (in the text, he prefers the term ”theocratic direction”), but his analysis likely will strike chords among those troubled by our current political moment. Phillips (American Dynasty) expounds upon historical parallels for each of his three subjects. In his section on ”Oil and American Supremacy,” for example, he points to Britain’s post-WWI involvement in the Middle East as an analogy to Iraq, and in his section on radicalized religion, he warns of ”the pitfalls of imperial Christian overreach from Rome to Britain.” The five major measures of U.S. debt—from national to household—keep setting records, he observes in his section on ”Borrowed Prosperity,” and the real estate boom spurred by the Federal Reserve, he argues, cannot continue. Phillips identifies the escalating clout of the financial services industry and suggests that Americans should emulate policies in Asia that encourage savings and in Europe that encourage manufacturing.
